Walk/run/pole along the sparkling waters of Georgian Bay in support of Cardiac Care at our local Health Centre.
Sunday, May 31st, 2020

2020 is the 13th year running of our Georgian Bay Walk, Run, Pole for local cardiac care. This event is now the largest Fundraiser for the Foundation.  Previous events have infused the local community with exercise enthusiasm, while tapping into the keen desire throughout the province for sport tourism.  Organizer’s two key objectives are:  buying critical equipment for local cardiac services – the only Cardiac Care on the 300K route between Barrie and Sudbury – and encouraging seasonal residents to join us in our preferred run destination.

The 2020 date for the 13th Annual event is Sunday May 31st.  The West Parry Sound Health Centre’s Cardiac Rehab program and the Foundation organize the run.   Over 50 volunteers staff the event.  Local cardiac services support many families – both full and seasonal residents.

In the past this event has bought the ER and ICU 3 of the 4 Bi-PAPP machines in the Health Centre; supported the reopening of our ICU when equipment failure forced the closure in 2014; renewed all the exercise and patient monitoring equipment in cardiac rehab and purchased other key equipment.

The West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation is dedicated to raising money to keep equipment current at the Health Centre.   Because donors are key to equipment purchases, smaller, remote hospitals experience an exaggerated difficulty in accumulating the money to buy new or replacement items.   It’s an inequity between urban and rural centers that can be rectified by maximizing support from community business partners.

With 591 employees, the Health Centre is the largest employer in the area.  The sheer number of seasonal residents gives our Foundation a reach into the most affluent households in the GTA.  The West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation is committed to corporate partnerships that enhance the marketing power of our corporate sponsors and the Foundation’s ability to secure current technology for the Health Centre.

Parry Sound’s Health Centre is an ultra-modern rural teaching hospital affiliated with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, and Canadore.  Despite being situated in a remote Northern location, the Health Centre supported 20,000 emergency visits last year as well as 25,000 plus visits to our six nursing stations located in surrounding, isolated areas.  The Health Centre serves 6 surrounding First Nation communities and created  the first Native Healing Room when building our hospital (opened in 2005).  Our surrounding resident population of 24,000 expands to 120,000 seasonally.  In 2019 there were 44,000 patient registrations in the Health Centre.

  • To maximize revenues to buy life-saving equipment, keeping hospital care local
  • To establish Parry Sound’s Georgian Bay Walk, Run, Pole as a preferred run destination
  • To increase general awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle in combating heart disease
  • To enhance the economic return to local businesses in the shoulder season
