Donations Spread Our Wings
When an Emergency happens, you call 911. You trust the hospital will have everything you need – whether it’s mending your broken bone or saving your life. You are focused on getting to the hospital and getting better. You don’t give it another thought … but you should. The only reason your cottage hospital is ready is because donors bought the equipment to re-open ICU when a system failure forced the 12-day closure April 2014. You receive the surgery you need because donors bought the 3 new anesthetic machines ensuring safe sedation. The OR is safe because donors bought the decontamination machine ensuring no infections. The CT scan, while aging, is there for you because when the Health Centre opened in 2005 donors bought that too. The list is endless and so is our thankfulness. In 2014, the West Parry Sound Health Centre was Accredited with Exemplary Standing because staff are amazing, procedures are top notch and donors are the best. You can’t be the best hospital without the best equipment. In today’s world of tight government budgets, it’s donors who make the difference in transforming health care. It’s a role we want to honour with our Northern Angel Council.
Chaired by Debbie Bongard, long time cottager in Pointe an Baril and inspired by Jim Meekison and Carolyn Keystone, the Council was launched in May 2015. By Summer 2017, the Council had secured $3 million in pledges. Having realized its first goal, the current goal is to raise an additional $3.8 million in new 5-year pledges to meet the Health Centre’s $10,000,000 modernization challenge with advanced digital technology.
While pledges are 5 years, the Council hopes to create long-term relationships with our many supportive friends.
Through the first years of the Northern Angel Council, the Foundation received our first $1,000,000 donation, our first $500,000 donation and our first $250,000 donation. Donors’ support is keeping our hospital care local. We hope to inspire others in the constant struggle to keep hospital care local.
The top level of the Council has annual pledges of $5,000 or more in new donations (pledged for 5 years); with a further level of $1,000 annually (pledged for 5 years) in new donations. Membership has its privileges. Talk to us.

Secret Question: The WPSHCF is located in?
Secret Answer: Parry Sound
**Please include a mailing address in the additional notes to receive your tax receipt**
An in-kind gift is a donation other than cash. You may wish to donate something of value, for instance artwork, antiques, securities, real estate and receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the gift. For tax evaluation, the appraisal of a recognized expert or professional is required before a receipt is issued. If the West Parry Sound Health Centre cannot use the donated item, the Foundation may elect to sell it and use the proceeds.
Chritable Remainder Trust
A charitable remainder trust allows the donor to donate assets to the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation while receiving earnings payments from the Foundation during his/her lifetime for a set number of years. Upon the donor’s death, the ‘remainder’ of the gift reverts to the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation. There are revocable and irrevocable charitable remainder trusts with different tax implications for the donor.
Charitable Residual Trust
A little bit of, “Having your cake and eating it too.” The donor donates property to the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation and continues to use it during his/her lifetime. For example, the owner of a cottage donates the land and buildings to the Foundation and continues to live in or use the property until death.
Registered Retirement Savings Plans and Registered Retirement Income Funds
Gifts made through registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) and registered retirement income funds (RRIFs) are a popular way to offset taxes owing at the time of death.
When you name The West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation directly as beneficiary, your estate will save probate fees. Your gift is treated as a charitable donation in the year of death and is eligible for a tax credit on your final tax return, and/or the one immediately preceding the final return. The tax credit may completely offset the taxes payable on the proceeds.

Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others, cannot keep it from themselves. – JM Barrie
Like most Canadians your tradition may be to write a cheque to your favourite charity. Under new rules in Canada’s federal budget, it’s possible to give stocks, bonds, futures and options, as well as shares in mutual funds and you pay absolutely no tax on any capital gains applicable to the donated securities.
But, whatever you do…Don’t sell the stock, transfer it to us to sell! If you sell the stock and make a cash gift, you lose the tax advantage of gifting the stock or investment instrument itself.
To make a gift of securities is easy! Simply download the Securities Transfer Form and follow the instructions.
Establishing Endowed Named Funds
Using current or future donations, you can establish an endowed named fund at The West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation in support of the Health Centre’s highest priority or a specific project. These funds are created to honour a donor, a family or a loved one. Endowed named funds, retain the initial capital donation with revenues providing a living tribute to special people and families.
Our Endowment – The Forever Fund
The Forever Fund represents our vision To Provide Extraordinary Support for the Hospital in Parry Sound.
One of the urgent priorities is to build our endowment in support of emerging technology and new services. The money is permanently invested and the principal is always kept intact. Each year, a portion of the income is used to support the purchase of new equipment or the development of new patient services. Building our endowment is essential because it will ensure the West Parry Sound Health Centre has the ongoing funds necessary to provide extraordinary health care in cottage country.
Endowed funds provide tributes to special people that have made a promise to care for their community long into the future. Click here to read our investment policy.
An Archipelago Islander seeded the Forever Fund Christmas 2008. Our generous benefactor has been in the area for generations and his family’s love for the many riches garnered from memories and summer-long experiences have made them faithful supporters of the Foundation. The family, while wishing to stay anonymous, hopes that others will see the importance of the long-term support of the Health Centre.
The Foundation’s Endowment Committee oversees the management of the portfolio guided by the Board approved.
Located in the light-filled corridor between the Health Centre’s Acute Care and Transitional Nursing Stations is the Foundation’s Wall of Love. The Wall pays tribute to individuals honoured by donations made in their name to the Foundation. The donations must accumulate to $1,000 or more and may honor any life event from birth through death.
The Wall was designed by Marlene Hilton Moore a visual artist residing in Hillsdale, Ontario. Hilton Moore has many Public Art Commissions in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick.
Acknowledging Our Best Friends
The West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation makes every gift – whether the gift of time, the gift of money, or the gift of wisdom – work towards advancing our vision: To Provide Extraordinary Health Care in Cottage Country. We wish to thank our donors for the significant impact they make to patient care at The West Parry Sound Health Centre.
Donor Recognition – Making a Lasting Difference
In honour of our Donors’ shared vision To Provide Extraordinary Health Care in Cottage Country, we have developed a Donor Recognition Program, highlighted by the Cascade of Caring Wall in the main Atrium of the Health Centre, the Wall of Love between our Nursing Stations and the Sounders’ Wall in the Friendship Garden.
It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life, that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Cascade of Caring Wall honours Major Gifts, which are donations or pledges in the amount of $5,000 and up. It is here that the Foundation recognizes your ‘Life Time Value’ with a plaque of your wording (3 lines of 25 letters). Your ‘Life Time Value’ is the accumulated total of donations (actual or pledged) to the Foundation.
The wall is located in the main Atrium at the West Parry Sound Health Centre. Shimmering water cascades behind a glass wall drawing attention to the many individuals, families and organizations that have chosen this meaningful way to support The WPSHC. In celebrating a loved one or your own personal history in the area, donors make a lasting contribution to treatment, services and patient care at the West Parry Sound Health Centre.
The calming sound of flowing water sends a message of peace and courage to people living with disease, and reminds us of the caring and hopeful spirit of our health centre.
Cascade of Caring plaques are available in ranges from $5,000, $10,000, $25,000, $100,000 and $500,000+. Payment options include either a one-time gift or a 5-year pledge paid by monthly or annual instalments. For more information, contact us at 1-888-262-0436 or locally at (705) 746-4540 ext 3348.
Phil Miller, graphic designer and artist retired to Carling Township, generously designed the Cascade of Caring Wall.

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. — Winston Churchill
Providing extraordinary health care in cottage country takes everyone working together. At the West Parry Sound Health Centre (WPSHC), our clinical staff, volunteers, and seasonal and full-time residents, work every day toward this goal. By making a Major Gift, you can play a key role in the continuing effort to provide extraordinary health care in Canada’s rugged Georgian Bay country.
Cutting-edge technology and innovative services are the best tools we have to provide extraordinary health care in cottage country. Unless otherwise stipulated, your donation supports the Health Centre’s highest need.
Our donors have transformed our health centre and the way in which we care for our patients; first by supporting the building of our beautiful facility then with the on-going purchase of much needed diagnostic equipment and machinery.
There are many ways you can help provide extraordinary health care in cottage country, from making a personal gift, donating stock, or making a gift from a corporation or foundation.
In 2008 an anonymous donor seeded the Foundation’s Endowment Fund. Named the Forever Fund, donations to this fund preserve your capital and keep it working for local health services long into the future.
Recognizing our donors is very important to us.
For more information on how you can make a difference with a Major Gift or donation to the Forever Fund contact Lynne Atkinson, Executive Director at 1-888-262-0436 or locally at 705-746-4540 ext 3346.
Making Our Future Your Will
Hundreds of people make donations every year to keep hospital care local, but only those deeply committed to staying put in our rugged landscape will leave a gift in their will to ensure the same privilege of local hospital care for the next generation.
When you leave us a gift, we invest it in our Forever Fund and issue your Estate a charitable tax receipt. The Forever Fund promises to ensure local hospital care for the next generation by safely investing your gift but annually using the income it provides to buy priority items on the Hospital’s medical needs list.
It’s a win/win as a gift in your will may result in a significant tax savings to your Estate in the year of your death and the preceding year. One of our donors says a charitable gift in the will ‘is like directing your taxes to the hospital for local care, rather than sending it to the government as a death tax!’ To help draft your will, here is a list of Sample Will Clauses for you and your lawyer to contemplate.
Upon receiving your gift, we will honour you on our Cascade of Caring Wall in the Atrium of the West Parry Sound Health Centre.
Planned Giving By Gifting Your Life Insurance
Life insurance is an oft-overlooked source of planned giving yet it is a wonderful way to make a lasting difference.
A gift of life insurance will enable you to make a major gift through a policy you already own, or through a series of affordable premium payments.
There are a number of ways to donate and plan your life insurance gift.
Give A Gift that Gives & Remembers
To make a tribute gift, either in honour or in memory of someone, is a meaningful way to recognize your loved ones while contributing to the purchase of emerging technologies and new services in Cottage Country. Gifts in honour of your family member or friend that accumulate to $1,000 or more are recognized on the Foundation’s Wall of Love.
